How did you learn about this Seine Bight Website? My People are from there

Comments:

As a little boy I frequently spend summers and easter holidays in Seine Bight with my grand mother Budu. I fondly remember going to bathe in the sea on a daily basis after having breakfast, coming out to have lunch and going right back in again.

My Dear Friends,

By now I’m sure you’ve heard that our beloved priest and friend, Fr. Laz Augustine, died last Saturday evening around 10:30 P.M. Belize time in Guatemala City.

He put up a good fight, but in the end, God wanted him to himself and is now with him enjoying eternal life.  Please have your pastors remember him this weekend in their masses.  I ask you also to pray for the repose of his soul.

Fr. Laz’ remains were flown from Guatemala City yesterday afternoon to Dangriga.  I was at the airstrip to meet him and escorted him to the Hospital morgue.  There, along with his sister and one brother, prayed the church’s prayers for the dead for him.

His funeral services will be held on Friday at Sacred Heart Church at 2:00 P.M.  Also, on that day, he will lie in state at Sacred Heart Church at 1:00 P.M.  In addition, a Wake Service will be conducted on Thursday at the home of his sister in Lakeland.

Thanks, Deacon Nieves Hernandez

FATHER LAZ  (December 1952-July 2005)

I am truly saddened by the death of our very own Garifuna priest, Father Laz.  There are two things that I would like to say about our Father Laz.

Firstly, Father Laz loved his/our God.  The way he lived his life, it was like he was walking in God's footprints every step of the way.  He suffered in the end but I am sure that he saw it as carrying his cross like Jesus had to in his final days.  I am positive that Father Laz was ready to go to be with our Lord and maker.

Secondly, Father Laz loved his culture, Garifuna.  He married his love of God with the love of Garifuna and was the greatest Garifuna priest ever.  He was always willing to make mass in Garifuna with his people wherever we are.  We always looked forward to his homilies at nineteenth mass in Belize, all the districts, towns and villages, in LA, in Chicago and in New York.  It seems that Father Laz was always willing to come make mass for us wherever we are and it seems like he did with little back in return. We are truly going to miss his churruru Garifuna homilies.  The Lord had a higher calling for our Father Laz.  His death is a great loss to Garinagu.

Angie Mejia

I wish I knew Father Laz more to add to what I have heard said about him.  I listen to what the parishioners from Belmopan, Belize City and Corozal say.  The students he taught in Sacred Heart College, San Ignacio.

His sister Ofelia Arana Augustine who raised him in Dangriga after the mother died says she knew that he was destined for the seminary.  “He was saying Mass from he was nine” she said.

His homilies on Settlement Days were profound with humor without malice, with candor without arrogance, with compassion without penance.  The entire discourse was sweet melody and song.  In the development of Garifunaduo his life is an example for our Garifuna youth.

An icon in Garifuna history a transcendent to ethnic barriers.

We loved Father Laz.

Godsman Ellis

To add my little grain of sand I must say that Fr. Laz was a proud of our
culture and no one has yet come close to dealing with ethnic and national
issues during the nineteenth masses.  The energy he had and the charisma with which he delivered some very strong messages including supporting Sylvania Woods struggles to put Kriol Language on the map.
I also like his singing and call/response in church.  Our love for him will
endure.

Ludwig Palacio

July 17,2005 was my 40th wedding anniversary. However the day turned out to be a very sad one. First of all I heard about Fr. Laz's passing and I was only minutes away from calling him when I heard that Reynold had also died. Thank heavens I was spared from what would have been a very embarrasing phone call! These two people will be badly missed. Father Laz's sermons were very special./.../ Mr. C. Edmund Augustine, On behalf the people of Seine Bight please accept our sincere condolences. We also wish you another 40 years of wedding BLISS from http://www.SeineBight.Com

Back to The Official Website Of Seine Bight Village

According to MasterFisherman Balbino Palacio, - Seine Bight village was ideal for fishing but the peninsula was not so ideal for farming hence they found it neccesary to cross the lagoon west to the main land for more fertile farming land. They farmed near-by and went as far inland to where it is now George Town (then called Wahaleaf / California).
